Chapter 31

Friday morning

Tuper and Ron stood outside the Mazda, still parked in front of Willa’s house. Hawk came out of the garage carrying a set of locks.

“I offered to help him change those,” Ron said. “But he declined, saying it gave him something to do.”

“I did the same,” Tuper said.

Lana had stayed in the passenger seat. “What do we know about the missing girl?” she asked.

“She disappeared last night from Pronghorn Colony. It’s northwest of Great Falls, not far from Diamond Valley. Her name is Inger, and she turned eighteen last week.”

“That means Kingston didn’t do it,” Ron said.

“Not the actual kidnapping,” Lana countered. “But obviously, he’s not acting alone. If he’s part of an organized ring, they may have several people snatching the girls. He could be just one. Or he could have some other role. Or maybe Kingston had nothing to do with the missing girls. The way he followed those women last night makes him seem like a whole different kind of creep. But what else have we got? We—”

“Agony.” Tuper cut her off. “We don’t have much, but sitting around jawin’ about it ain’t gonna cut it. Let’s do something, even if it’s wrong.”

“I think that’s what we’ve been doing, because, so far, we haven’t found anything that leads us to those girls,” Lana muttered. “Should we go to Pronghorn and see what we can find out? I’ve got nothing else.”

“We have Finn,” Tuper said.

“I don’t know.” Lana shook her head. “That kid comes across as such a good guy. And I think he’s smitten with Rita. He seemed genuinely concerned about her.”

“Which is exactly what I would do if I was tryin’ to hide something.”

“I’ve done a lot of background work on Finn,” Lana argued. “There’s nothing in his life to suggest he’s involved with anything like this. He does well in school, stays out of trouble, and has a relatively normal family life. His parents are divorced, but the kid has a relationship with both. He’s shy, but not psycho shy. He just seems so … normal.”

“So did Ted Bundy,” Ron said.

“I’ll keep looking.” Lana glanced down at her laptop.

“I’m heading to Smith’s to see what else I can find out,” Tuper said. “Why don’t you and Ron go to Pronghorn and ask questions? I’ll call ahead and let them know you’re coming.”

She tipped her head. “Do you also know someone at that colony?”

“I know a guy or two.”

Lana packed up her laptop, got in Ron’s car, and they drove off.
